That roadblock is a plateau. You are not gaining more lean mass and you know that you can. If you are in this situation, then you need to know how to motivate yourself to work through your plateau.

You can burst through the plateaus to greater achievements.

Start Writing a Workout Journal

When you are faced with a workout plateau, one of the first things you need to do is start writing. If you don’t already keep a workout journal, start one. A workout journal helps you track your progress. You will be able to see what exercises you are doing and if you are progressing in each of those exercises. You’ll also be able to see if maybe you are doing the same exercises over and over again.

If you already keep a journal, start asking questions. Are you able to increase the weight each week? Are you always using resistance machines? Are you always using free weights? Is your workout too long? Depending on your answer to each question, you will be able to determine if there is a flaw in your workout routine. Once you find the flaw you can correct it and break through the plateau.

Seek Advice from an Expert

Bodybuilding is generally a solitary endeavor, but it never has to be. If you find yourself lacking in motivation to get through a plateau, ask for help. Seek out a personal trainer or other bodybuilding athletes who have trained for a long time and who will understand what you are going through. At some point in time everyone hits a sticking point. That point where they seem to be stuck in a rut and gains stop. A personal trainer or workout buddy will be able to see things that you can’t and help you progress to the next level.

Visualize Your Goals

Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “The visualization process was essential if I was to gain the mass and size I needed to win the Mr. Olympia contest.” If you are truly determined to break through your plateau, you must see it. You must see yourself gaining more muscle. You must see yourself lifting heavier weight. Take a few minutes out of every day to see yourself accomplishing your bodybuilding goals. If you dedicate just a few minutes to the visualization process, you will be able to smash through your plateau in no time.


It’s Your Way of Life

Gaining lean mass is not something that can be achieved in a day or a week. It takes months and years of training to really be able to achieve considerable amounts of lean mass. If you treat bodybuilding as just an insignificant and transient part of your life, change your thinking. Bodybuilding, in general, will help you get leaner, stronger and can help you live a longer, healthier life. Also, if you view your workout sessions as a chore, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Eventually, you are going to get tired of doing that chore, and plateaus are one way in which that type of fatigue presents itself. If you view your workout sessions as a chance to progress, get healthier, get stronger and ultimately live longer so you can enjoy everything that life has to offer, you’ll find that you’ll break through your current plateau and any plateaus you experience in the future.

Will Yourself to Do Better

The human will is a marvelous thing. Famous people throughout history have been able to accomplish incredible feats through hard work and their will. These people had an idea or a goal and stopped at nothing until they achieved the desired end. It will take extra work on your part. You will have to crank out an extra rep at the end of each set. You will have to sweat harder. You may have to grunt, groan and even curse a bit. But, in the end you will break through your plateau because you willed it so.
